This course is aimed for parents with children under the age of 10 and presented by South African social workers, a clinical psychologist and counsellors who live, eat and breathe to see families just like yours – thrive!
We've taken everything we've learned from over a decade of strengthening families and looked at how research has said family resilience should be built. Arise Family is an NGO based on the Cape Flats of South Africa. We believe that every child is created to be part of a thriving family. Our model incorporates strength-based and resilience building interventions, and we work with both children and parents or caregivers to counsel, strengthen, and equip families so that they can be a place where children feel safe, loved, and find a sense of belonging.
Arise has over 12 years experience in programme development and facilitation. We have won national awards for our programmes that are now being used internationally. The goal of our work has always been to see families, groups and individuals develop in a thriving environment in order to reach their full potential. We want to see this for your family too!

Family is the crucible of life. It is the starting point of all relationships and the course of our family life dictates many of our future paths. We need families that can weather the storms thrown at them and emerge capable as they adapt, engage, connect and learn to thrive in the midst of challenges. Strong and resilient families are needed to ensure that children grow up to reach their full potential.
And this is what it could look like for you. Quality time with your kids where you all are laughing, having fun and connecting. Feeling confident as you approach hard conversations and a growing appreciation for how your beloved child is able to open up and express what they are feeling. Knowing that even as you approach the hard bits of parenting like challenging behaviour or helping our kids to learn, you’re doing so with the skills and ability to put your relationship with your child first and continue to foster their sense of self.

What's the time investment for building the FSK?
Putting your kit together should not take much time at all once you have collected all the required materials. Collecting the materials should be fairly easy in a single shopping trip and by going through the arts and crafts supplies you already have at home. The entire kit should take less than 2 hours to assemble, including and shopping that needs to be done.
How much will it cost me to build a FSK if I don't have the items at home?
This kit has been designed to be low cost and easy to assemble. The exact cost will depend entirely on how many items you need to buy, where you buy them and possibly the country you live in. At our centre, we are able to put the kits together for R350 each.
How often should I use the FSK once I've built it?
The beauty of the Family Strengthening Kit is that there is no right or wrong way to use it! You can use it where ever and whenever you would like, as often as you like. Some families choose a set time about once a week to do a family activity together, others use it daily to have play time together and still others dip into the kit and the skills discussed as they need it in their family lives.
Can I do the course all in one go or is it best to invest some time each week?
You are welcome to do the course in the way it best suits you. Some people have found it helpful to watch everyone in one go before they put their kits together and others have worked at the course a little at a time, on a weekly basis. We will send you a weekly email prompt to help keep you on track and encourage you to keep working through the modules. You can also go back and redo modules more slowly as and when you need to.
